You and your pet

Please click on the links to visit pages that you might find helpful.  You know, so many people get pets and then have no idea what to do with them.  They put them in the backyard or tie them up out in the yard and then wonder why the dog is crazy hyper or showing aggression.  Then they call shelters and rescues to turn them in because they can’t handle them.  It’s horrible.  Here is what these typical calls sound like:

Hello?

Hi..  Ummm I have a dog and well you know I really love him and well I can’t keep him..

Really?  Why?

Well, uhhh…  He’s crazy.. I am worried he might knock over my baby.. (OK had the dog been in the house and learning as the child grew then this would have never been an issue— obviously this dog was not part of the family).

Oh, so has he been around your child?

No he’s tied up in the backyard (of course why did I bother asking— I should have known).. He gets real excited and crazy when we go out there and we’re afraid he’s going to hurt the baby (oh that’s right because most bite cases are by dogs that are tied up!!!).

Well, we don’t usually take dogs from the public and we are actually packed right now (in my head—-with dogs that were scheduled to die at a shelter because like you their owners didn’t care).

Oh well I thought you were a rescue..

Well, we are we rescue what we can.. Your dog has a home let’s just keep him there and help you out to integrate him into your family.

Oh, well I don’t think we have time..

(In my head— Really I work full time and run the rescue and am a single mother of two with a whole lot of dogs).. Instead I say— Oh well let me explain to you what will probably happen.. You turn over your dog to a shelter because you’ve ruined it.. Then a month later you decide the baby needs a cute little puppy and within a year this one too will be ruined in the backyard because you all didn’t have time to train it..

Oh yea that’

S already happened this is our 4th dog so far and we’ve had him the longest— we’ve had him almost a whole year!!!

Ok here’s the number to our trainer we work with give her a call and keep your dog.. Do something fun with him and make him a part of your family..

So let’s prevent this from even happening..  There are so many things that you can do with your pet it is insane.  But the first thing you want to do is make your pet a part of the family.. I know it’s a lot of work at the beginning but it’s worth it in the end when your dog is well behaved and you are happy to have him in your home.  It takes work to have an animal— if you are lazy and just going to toss it outside in the yard and forget about it then get a stuffed animal.  Remember they are pack animals and will always try their hardest to please their pack leader.  But you have to show them how to behave if you want a well behaved dog and that does take some work. You get out what you put in— if you put nothing in you get nothing back..
